Admission is free and spectators can attend all phases of the competition, according to a community announcement.
Competitors from Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, North Dakota, Missouri and Nebraska are expected to participate.
Organizers said prize money, feed, apparel, services and other awards will be available through event sponsorships.
The competition entrance is at W6224 Woodland Road in Plymouth near Sargento off County Road C.
Riders will compete in three disciplines over the course of the event: dressage, cross-country and stadium jumping.
Dressage competition begins at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 25. During the phase, riders complete a series of prescribed movements designed to demonstrate communication and control between horse and rider.
Stadium jumping follows at 11 a.m. Sept. 25 and returns at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 27. The phase challenges riders to navigate a course of colored fences and obstacles within an optimum time. Competitors can receive penalties for knocked rails, refusals or exceeding the target time.
Cross-country phase highlights course additions
Cross-country competition is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 26. The course features fixed obstacles including logs, cabins, coops, ditches, banks and water elements spread across fields, wooded areas and rolling terrain.
According to the announcement, Sundance Farm recently added new obstacles for each division, creating new challenges for returning competitors.
While riders may walk the course before competing, horses are not permitted to view it in advance. Riders are required to wear helmets and protective vests during the phase, and horses wear protective leg equipment.
Event known for signature jumps
Organizers say the horse trial has become known among competitors for several distinctive obstacles, including bright triangular Sargento cheese wedge jumps and the Bank First National Picture Frame jump used by upper-level competitors.
According to the announcement, the event is in its 12th year and has been featured in National Eventing magazine as a Midwest destination for eventing competitors.
The property will also include temporary horse stabling and vendor areas featuring equestrian products.
Food will be available on-site, and spectators are encouraged to arrive early to watch horses and riders prepare and warm up before competition begins.
Competition is expected to conclude around 11 a.m. Sept. 27, depending on the number of entries.
