The Marlins took a 3-0 lead in the second inning off Padres starter Casey Mize. Jakob Marsee and Agustin Ramirez led off the rally with back-to-back singles. Joe Mack drove a run in on a ground out and Otto Lopez followed it up with a two-run home run, his 11th of the season.
The Padres responded in the bottom half of the second with a solo home run by Samad Taylor, his second of the season.
Ramirez drove in a run on a double and scored on a single by Esteury Ruiz in the third inning. Despite not being an everyday outfielder, Ruiz was able to pick up his team-high 31st stolen base.
Things unraveled for Marlins starting pitcher Eury Perez in the third inning. Perez loaded the bases with two singles and a walk before walking in a run. He let another run score on a balk and the Padres closed the gap to 5-4 with a sacrifice fly by Taylor.
The Padres tied the game 5-5 in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Fernando Tatis Jr., his 24th of the season.
The Padres took their first lead of the game in the sixth inning. Dustin Harris hit a double and scored on a double by Ty France.
Ruiz drew a walk and stole two bases (33) to get to third base in the eighth inning before the Padres called on Mason Miller to strike out the next two batters.
Griffin Conine came out off the bench as a pinch hitter and hit a solo home run in the ninth inning to force extra innings.
The Marlins will call on RHP Sandy Alcantara (13-10, 3.85 ERA) to salvage the series. The Padres, looking to close in on clinching the last playoff spot, will send RHP Walker Buehler (8-6, 4.58) to the mound on Sunday.
