Pirates Roster Moves: Konnor Griffin is Back

PITTSBURGH — Pirates rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin has been reinstated from the 60-day injured list and will be back on the field for Friday night’s game against the Angels at PNC Park.

Griffin was placed on the 10-day IL on July 7 after suffering a left ring finger sagittal band injury in a game at the Nationals two days prior. On July 11, the Pirates transferred the 20-year-old to the 60-day IL. Friday marks the first day Griffin was eligible to return.

Griffin has totaled 59 games for the Pirates since getting called up for the first time ahead of the team’s home opener on April 3. The 2024 first-round draft pick carries a .276/.332/.404 batting line with 10 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 25 RBI and 20 stolen bases.

In 40 games dating back to April 24 — his 20th birthday — Griffin has batted .314/.368/.472 with eight doubles, one triple, five home runs, 17 RBI and 16 stolen bases.

Defensively, Griffin has played 56 games at shortstop. He has a .971 fielding percentage and one defensive run saved.

In Griffin’s absence, the Pirates went 23-27. In games he’s played this year, Pittsburgh is 31-28.

In addition to activating Griffin, the Pirates are recalling right-handed reliever Isaac Mattson from Triple-A Indianapolis. Left-hander Brandon Eisert was optioned to Indianapolis and catcher Christian Bethancourt was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man and active rosters for Griffin.

Mattson has made 37 appearances with the Pirates this season and is 0-0 with 4.91 ERA across 36.2 innings.

Eisert made a pair of scoreless appearances after getting recalled on Tuesday. In 34 appearances/four starts between the White Sox and Pirates this season, he’s 2-2 with a 6.00 ERA.

Bethancourt did not appear in a game in either the minor leagues or majors after he was acquired from the Yankees on Aug. 19.
