The Philadelphia Phillies, in need of more offense, swung a trade for Luis Arraez prior to the trade deadline. Philadelphia’s pressing position of need, however, was in the outfield, but they ended up acquiring a second baseman in Arraez, requiring some serious defensive reshuffling. In fact, Bryce Harper, who hasn’t suited up in the outfield since 2022, made the switch to right field to accommodate for their newest acquisition.

The Phillies have had one of the worst defenses in MLB in 2026, so making these defensive changes was a huge risk. But they believe that the offensive trade-off is well worth it anyway. In fact, rumor has is that Philly believes that there no longer is room at the bottom for their defense to get any worse.

“I’ve heard the logic from Phillies people: ‘Well, our defense can’t be any worse,'” Ken Rosenthal said in an appearance on Foul Territory TV.

According to The Fielding Bible, the Phillies currently rank 29th in Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) with -36. Only the Twins have been worse than them on the field this year, according to that metric. The Phillies also rank 29th in defensive efficiency (.673), and in total fielding runs above average (-45).

Suffice to say, the Phillies have already been terrible, and Arraez’s arrival won’t help matters much even though he’s a much-improved defender at second base. Philly had to move Alec Bohm from third to first and Bryson Stott from second to third, and those on-the-fly adjustments could make it even more difficult for them to cobble together a solid defense.

The Phillies have one of the best pitching rotations in MLB anyway, so perhaps they’re hoping to mitigate whatever runs they give up on defense by simply preventing balls in play to begin with.

Arraez has recorded a batting average of .333 and an OPS of 1.111 through his first nine at-bats with the Phillies.
