The Portland Trail Blazers took on the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday, with Ja Morant’s revenge the main storyline following his exit from Memphis in the summer. However, Morant’s game ended prematurely after he left the game due to a left hamstring injury and did not return.

The Grizzlies wound up routing Morant and the Blazers, 124-103. Morant finished with 14 points, two rebounds, and three assists in 23 minutes of action.

The Grizz blew the game wide open midway through the third quarter. They outscored the Blazers 66-45 in the second half to improve to 5-0 on the season. Rookie Cam Boozer led the way for the Grizzlies with his first career triple double of 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists. Eight Grizzlies finished in double digits, including Ty Jerome, who scored a season-low 10 points.

Deni Avdija led the Blazers with 24 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. Damian Lillard had nine points on 3-of-13 shooting as they fell to 3-1 on the season.

Morant was the No. 2 overall pick by the Grizzlies in the 2019 NBA Draft. He spent seven seasons in Memphis, making 327 appearances and averaging 22.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 7.4 assists. After a promising start to his career, Morant’s time in Memphis was marred by suspensions, as well as continued injury concerns that limited his availability and productivity.

Morant was traded to Portland in the offseason for Jerami Grant and Kris Murray. He has hade a strong start to his Blazers career. Prior to the Grizzlies game, he had averaged 16.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 6.3 assists in 26.7 minutes over the first three games, while shooting 58.8 percent from the field.

The Blazers will be back in action to face the Utah Jazz on Saturday to start a four-game road trip. It remains to be seen whether Morant will be available for that trip following his hamstring injury.
