Coming off a season in which the San Antonio Spurs won eight of their 12 contests (regular season and playoffs combined) against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Victor Wembanyama must have been brimming with confidence heading into the two sides’ clash on opening night. However, it’s hard to imagine the 7-foot-4 star having a worse shooting display than the one he had to begin the 2026-27 season.

Wembanyama had 12 points on the night, and he had his moments defensively as well, recording six blocks against the Thunder. But of those 12 points, 10 came from the free-throw line. The Spurs star made just one of his 13 field-goal attempts on the night, missing all four of his shots from beyond the arc. The only field goal Wembanyama made came in the dying seconds of the third quarter, when he punched home an alley-oop from De’Aaron Fox.

This is quite the outlier performance from Wembanyama; he did not have a single game last season with fewer than three made field-goals. In five regular-season games against the Thunder last season, he averaged 18.4 points and shot 52.4% from the field. In the seven-game Western Conference Finals series, he averaged 27.3 points on 48.1% shooting.

This is also a complete 180 of his season-opening performance last season, when he recorded 40 points on 15-of-21 shooting in a 33-point blowout of the Dallas Mavericks.

The Thunder defense deserve a lot of credit for flustering Wembanyama. Isaiah Hartenstein was bruising him up yet again, while Chet Holmgren didn’t completely wilt against the man who considers him as his archnemesis. Aday Mara also had his moments against the Spurs star.

But the touch simply wasn’t there for Wembanyama on the night, and towards the end of the game, it looked as though his confidence in his jumpshot had vanished completely.

Nonetheless, this is only one game, and there are no reasons for Spurs fans to hit the panic button.
