Amazon's October Prime Day sale has the 2024 Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition down to $169.99 from $249.99, taking $80 off the most fully featured version of the Paperwhite. The price is what makes this deal worth a closer look, since Amazon raised prices across most of its Kindle lineup in August, citing higher memory and storage costs. The standard 16GB Paperwhite went from $159.99 to $199.99, so at $169.99, the Signature Edition now costs $30 less than the base model's list price (though it’s currently discounted to $149.99 for Prime Day). Amazon also unveiled a redesigned Kindle lineup just days ago, including an aluminum-backed Paperwhite Signature in a fun Seaglass Green color, but it costs $249.99, and won't ship until October 28.

The Paperwhite Signature shares the standard model's seven-inch, 300ppi E Ink display and IPX8 waterproofing, so taking it to the pool or reading in the bath is fair game. Where it pulls ahead is in the extras, starting with an ad-free lock screen and a front light that adjusts automatically as your surroundings change, saving you from fiddling with the brightness every time you move from a sunny patio to reading in bed. Storage doubles from 16GB to 32GB as well, which is probably more than most ebook libraries need (speaking of, did you know you could get two free ebooks this month?) but leaves additional room for audiobooks, comics, and large PDFs. Audio playback requires Bluetooth headphones, since there’s no headphone jack.

Another convenience you don't get with the standard Paperwhite is 10W Qi wireless charging, although you'll need to provide your own wireless charger and power adapter. The 2024 model also feels noticeably quicker than older Paperwhites, with Amazon claiming 25% faster page turns compared with the 2021 generation—this PCMag review found the difference noticeable when waking the device, browsing the library, and turning pages. None of these upgrades fundamentally changes what a Kindle does (though our guide to lesser-known Kindle features can help you get more out of yours), and with a new generation arriving, the 2024 model is no longer the latest Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition. But at $170 for Prime Big Deal Day, those extras are much easier to justify.
