Sam LaPorta Fantasy Week 4 Start or Sit: A Top-10 Floor Is Good Enough

Detroit travels to Carolina on Sunday with LaPorta fifth among tight ends in PFN’s Week 4 rankings, and the huge Jahmyr Gibbs games are a bit of a pain: they create scoring position, but Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown finish most of those drives. I trust the efficiency, though, and that creates enough of a floor to save you, with his first 20-plus-yard catch of the year coming in the third quarter against the Jets. Defenses asked to chase that many elite Detroit athletes leave natural gaps for him to fill. I don’t think the ceiling is top 10 at the position, but the floor is, and that’s good enough.

Should You Start or Sit Sam LaPorta in Week 4?

These huge Jahmyr Gibbs games are a bit of a pain. Yes, they put the Lions in scoring position, but it’s him and Amon-Ra St. Brown who finish most of those drives, and if LaPorta can’t crack into that hierarchy, his ceiling isn’t going to be high enough to justify the level of confidence that we have for this profile.

By and large, I trust the efficiency, and that creates enough of a floor to save you. In the third quarter last week against the Jets, LaPorta hauled in his first 20-plus-yard reception of the season. Those sorts of plays have my interest: opposing defenses are asked to chase so many elite Detroit athletes all over the field that there are naturally gaps for a player like LaPorta to fill.

I don’t think he has a top-10 ceiling at the position, but I do think the floor is that of a top-10 option at the position, and that’s good enough.
