Students face officers at friendly basketball game in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS - Roosevelt High School launched a new event during this week’s homecoming activities, a sports showdown featuring students competing against local first responders.

RHS student team competed against members of the St. Louis Municipal Police Department's Central Patrol in a friendly game of hoops.
“One of our graduation coaches, Dr. Quincy Howard, came to me a couple of weeks ago and say, hey, the police want to get together and, you know, do this with the kids," said Principal Dr. Duane Foster. "And I'm like, this is an excellent opportunity."
“We’ve got some students like, not really familiar with the police, so I feel like this opportunity out here gets them to come together," said student player Ty Ross Jr.
St. Louis native Von Scales, husband of Trina Braxton, dies at 58As today's game progressed, competition gave way to fellowship. Friendships were forged and the potential for recruits to added to the SLMPD's future roster.
“There's a good possibility that some of these guys, in a couple years, when they turn 21 will want to become police officers,” Lt. Sam Gilman said.
