Ed Orgeron Walks With Cane for Nation’s No. 1 WR as Lane Kiffin Faces Big SEC Threat for 5-Star Texas Commit
· Yahoo Sports
Easton Royal is still committed to Texas. But everything around the Louisiana player is getting louder. The 5-star from Brother Martin in New Orleans is the No. 1 WR in the 2027 class and has gained interest from multiple SEC programs. LSU has been pushing, and Florida is now making a serious charge. Texas, meanwhile, has no intention of simply watching its prized commitment drift away. And on Friday, LSU put two familiar faces in the same building to make its case.
TigerBait.com’s Grant Chachere reported that LSU WRs coach George McDonald was at Strawberry Stadium in Hammond to watch Easton Royal play for Brother Martin against Edna Karr. So was Ed Orgeron, the former Tigers’ head coach, who has returned to LSU in a special recruiting role under Lane Kiffin.

Ed Orgeron was walking with a cane, and his presence tells you how seriously LSU is taking this recruitment. The 65-year-old has been working his way back after a frightening bout with sepsis in August that left him hospitalized for 18 days. He returned to LSU in September and has continued his recovery while wearing compression socks and using a cane. Yet there he was in Hammond, doing recruiting work.
Easton Royal has already spoken about the impression Ed Orgeron made on him. Their early meeting in Baton Rouge reportedly stood out because, well, this is Coach O we’re talking about. The energy is hard to miss. His recruiting style has never been described as quiet.
Easton Royal, Source: IGGeorge McDonald brings a different kind of connection. The veteran coach spent the previous two seasons at Ole Miss under Lane Kiffin before joining LSU, taking over as the Tigers’ passing game coordinator and WRs coach. Lane Kiffin himself could not make the trip. LSU was preparing to host McNeese State on Saturday, leaving McDonald and Orgeron to handle the recruiting visit. And they were not alone in wanting Royal’s attention.
Steve Sarkisian was also expected in Hammond. Easton Royal has been committed to Texas since November 2025, but the Longhorns have spent months dealing with questions about whether that pledge will survive.
LSU made enough progress for Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong to predict in July that the Tigers would flip him. Now Florida is crashing the party. Easton Royal visited Gainesville recently for Florida’s 52-28 win over Ole Miss, and the visit clearly landed. He told Rivals’ Sam Spiegelman that he could “100 percent” see himself playing for the Gators and added that he was “very close to a decision.”
That is not the kind of language Texas wants to hear from a longtime commitment. Florida has another unofficial visit with Easton Royal scheduled for Oct. 10. LSU, meanwhile, continues to have the obvious geographic advantage. The star WR is a Louisiana native, and the Tigers have already hosted him on an official visit.
The bigger point is obvious. Easton Royal’s recruitment has become genuinely fluid. Now, Texas has no room for complacency. The Longhorns are coming off a narrow win over Tennessee and have a bye this weekend, giving Steve Sarkisian extra time to focus on recruiting. He used some of it to check in with their top priority pledge.
That matters because Florida’s recent surge has changed the shape of this race. Texas is still the school holding the commitment, but holding a commitment and keeping a player are two very different things this late in the cycle.
Easton Royal is not just another highly rated WR, either. He is a 5’11, 200-pound playmaker who caught 54 passes for 1,065 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior. He was named 5A Offensive MVP and earned first-team All-State honors.
For LSU, the pitch is simple enough, and that’s to stay home. For Florida, the pitch is momentum. And for Texas, it is about proving that the commitment still means what it did when Easton Royal made it nearly a year ago.
