"It feels good to be back in the Red Bull family," former Salzburg boss Schmidt said in a statement on Thursday.

"This environment is unique in world football and the ambition behind it is what makes it so exciting. Now I am looking forward to getting to know the people behind our clubs, understanding how they work and building the future on foundations that are already strong."

The German's first weeks in the role will focus on the Red Bull portfolio of clubs across the globe, including talks with coaching teams, sporting directors and those responsible for the academies.

The ex-Bayer Leverkusen, Benfica and PSV Eindhoven boss will also attend matches at Salzburg and RB Leipzig.

Klopp was only in the role for just over 18 months after leaving Liverpool. His last major act was to agree to the sacking of Leipzig coach Ole Werner despite his side finishing third in the Bundesliga. Replacement Martín Demichelis has had a mixed start.
