Roman Anthony couldn't believe it happened again.
During the Red Sox's Game 1 loss to the Yankees on Tuesday night, Boston's designated hitter suffered a right hand strain, forcing him to exit the postseason contest after just two at-bats. The Red Sox later announced that Curtis Mead would replace Anthony on the playoff roster, meaning Anthony will not be eligible to return until the American League Championship Series.
Before Wednesday's Game 2, Anthony, who missed more than 100 games during the regular season with a similar issue in his hand, told reporters that he had been managing pain throughout the year.
"I've been experiencing some things with the swings and the check swings over the past six weeks, and last night just felt a little bit more intense, a little bit more harsh than past swings have," Anthony said. "It lingered a little bit longer than the ones that I was used to had. It was super alarming, and it got to a point where it was tough to grip a bat.
"I knew then and there that this was a little bit more similar to the one earlier on in the year, and that's why we decided to go and get imaging."

Anthony admitted that his hand wasn't "fully 100 percent" after the initial injury, but he never felt the same level of discomfort that he did in Game 1. It was difficult for Anthony to know that his season could be over after he worked his way back into the lineup.
"I feel sick to my stomach," Anthony said. "I haven't slept much, doesn't really feel real, to be honest. I've been through so many different emotions and feelings throughout the course of this rehab process this year that, to kind of get the same news again, and even worse, it's just like... it's hard to have an answer to anything right now."

The 22-year-old finished the regular season with a slash line of .245/.339/.396 with five home runs and 15 RBIs. He struck out in both of his playoff at-bats, but his hand was clearly bothering him.
"It's been a confusing year," Anthony said. "I've dealt with more injuries now than I ever would have imagined over the course of my entire career. It's confusing. I do everything I can every single day to get ready, especially since I've been back with this injury in particular.
"Knowing what I've been dealing with, I've been more than on top of this to make sure that this doesn't happen, and here we are."
