New York Giants’ QB Options Reportedly Include J.J. McCarthy Trade
· Yahoo Sports
Just three games into their season, the New York Giants are scrambling a bit at the quarterback position. Franchise QB Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury, catapulting Jameis Winston into QB1 duties. But the only other QB on the roster, Jake Haener, has been with the team for just over a month. He’s also thrown just 39 passes in his young NFL career, with his last official attempt coming back in 2024.
With just two QBs in the organization, it’s only a matter of time before the Giants add another arm. Head coach John Harbaugh already admitted the team is working on bringing someone else in; the question is, will it be via free agency or by trade? Some think trading for a former first-round pick could be in play.

Could The New York Giants Trade for J.J. McCarthy?

Mandatory Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn ImagesWhile the pickings seem slim, in reality, there are a lot of different options that the Giants could pivot to next. That includes a somewhat recent first-round pick.
According to Sunday’s ESPN insider report from Adam Schefter and Mike Garafolo, one quarterback that the Giants are said to be considering is J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings. After slipping to QB3 in Minnesota behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz, the Vikings may be willing to listen to trade offers for their 23-year-old former first-round pick. Yet, McCarthy isn’t the only former first-round pick that the Giants are sniffing around. Other options also include Mac Jones and Justin Fields.
“Giants coach John Harbaugh said ‘all options are open’ for which quarterback his team will bring in.

Sources told ESPN and NFL Network that the list of quarterbacks includes free agent Jimmy Garoppolo, Cardinals backup Gardner Minshew II, Vikings reserve J.J. McCarthy, 49ers backup Mac Jones and Chiefs backup Justin Fields.”
How Winston performs will likely have a significant impact on the steps the Giants take next. If he can’t elevate the rest of the offense, the Giants may be more inclined to make a bigger move for a player who can potentially make a difference on game day. Meanwhile, if Winston puts forth an encouraging effort, the Giants may be content with signing someone from free agency or off another team’s practice squad.
