ETSU dominates Western Carolina in SoCon opener 58-31

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — ETSU opened Southern Conference play with an offensive explosion Saturday, defeating Western Carolina 58-31 in the annual Blue Ridge Border Battle.

The Bucs scored on all six of their first-half possessions to build a 34-7 halftime lead. The 58 points were ETSU’s most against a Division I opponent since the football program returned in 2015.
“I thought for four quarters we fought really hard. We played really hard,” ETSU head coach Will Healy said. “We had great energy on the sideline. We looked like we really wanted the game. We were into it, we were focused and we executed. But I don't think I'm ever content until we execute for 180 plays.”
ETSU piled up 542 yards of total offense, averaged 7.3 yards per play and went a perfect 8-for-8 in the red zone. The Bucs rushed for a season-high 233 yards and six touchdowns.
TJ Peyton led the ground attack with 102 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, while Jason Albritton scored a career-high three touchdowns. D’Marius Rucker and Jaiden Daniels also found the end zone, with Daniels recording his first collegiate touchdown.
Quarterback Mason Mims completed 20 of 27 passes for 220 yards and a touchdown, connecting with Charlie Browder for a 12-yard score late in the second quarter.
“Man, you know, Mason Mims is pretty daggum good,” Healy said.
ETSU was just as effective defensively early, holding Western Carolina to four first downs in the opening half and 1-for-6 on third down. The Bucs also recorded a season-high four sacks, including two from Charles Woodard.
“I thought we just let loose today,” Woodard said. “We really wanted to make a statement.”
ETSU stays home next Saturday for another rivalry matchup against Chattanooga. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Greene Stadium.
