Darius Slayton wasn’t surprised by Giants release, eager to reunite with Daniel Jones in Indy

Most weren’t really surprised to see the Giants release Darius Slayton before this season.
You can add Slayton himself to that list.

The veteran was the longest-tenured Giant heading into the year, but he could tell by how things played out throughout camp and preseason play that his time in the Big Apple was likely coming to an end.
“Based on how camp was going and the situation they had over there, it wasn’t much of a surprise to me,” Slayton told reporters. “Ultimately it is what it is, it led to be being here today, and I’m happy about it.”
Here, of course, is with the Indianapolis Colts.
Slayton drew interest from several clubs upon hitting the open market but opted to sign with Indy this week after seeing their deep-threat, Alec Pierce, land on IR with a heel injury.
“It’s a great opportunity here,” he said. “They’re a great unit, I saw Pierce went down -- obviously I wasn’t rooting for that -- but I knew that would provide some opportunity here, as well.”
And with that opportunity comes a chance to reunite with a very familiar face.
Slayton will be back catching passes from QB Daniel Jones, whom he quickly became one of the go-to targets for during their five years together with Big Blue.
The two connected 200 times over that span, the most of any player in Jones’ career.
“I really enjoyed playing alongside him,” Slayton said. “Philosophically, I think we see the field pretty similarly, that’s something that worked out well for us in the past, and I expect it to work well for us going forward here.”
While Slayton’s production dropped off significantly each of the past two seasons, he feels back to his old-self now that he's fully healthy following his offseason procedure.
“Hopefully I’ll be able to put that on display,” he said. “I’m going to do my best to try to learn this system as fast as I can, and try to provide an impact here as early as I can.”
