J.J. McCarthy News: Giants Urged To Trade For QB

J.J. McCarthy has not panned out for the Minnesota Vikings and, while it’s still early in his career, there’s a chance he’s already played his last snap with the team. Selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Michigan product entered his rookie offseason as Minnesota’s presumed starter. However, the quarterback suffered a season-ending injury in the offseason, forcing Sam Darnold to start in his place. Darnold performed admirably in his absence, going 14-3 before leading the Seattle Seahawks to the Super Bowl one year later.
With Darnold gone, J.J. McCarthy inherited the starting role in 2025, but didn’t play up to his potential. Starting and appearing in 10 games, McCarthy finished the season with a 6-4 record while completing just 57.6% of his passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. The Vikings signed veteran Kyler Murray following this lackluster season, and McCarthy couldn’t even beat out Carson Wentz for the backup job. With Wentz keeping the team afloat while Kyler Murray recovers from his concussion, it’s fair to wonder whether a change of scenery is necessary.

New York Giants starting quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a knee injury in Week 2 that could end his season. As of this point, we don’t know the full severity, but it’s safe to assume he won’t return to the field for quite some time. With this in mind, a desperate Giants squad could roll the dice on the Michigan product.

If Jaxson Dart is truly done for the year, then the New York Giants might as well call the Vikings and see what it would cost to obtain his services. Dart is the future of the Giants, and nothing McCarthy could do would change that. However, they need someone to step up and lead this team in the present, and veteran Jameis Winston may not be the best choice for the job.
Winston is one of the league’s best backups and could pull off a 400-yard game every time he steps onto the field. However, his erratic style of play leads to turnovers, and when he’s not on his ‘A’ game, he’s terrible. Last week, the veteran completed just 11 of his 27 attempts for 111 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. Quite frankly, J.J. McCarthy can’t do much worse than that, and he offers some upside as a relatively unknown commodity.
It’s hard to envision the Giants needing to send anything more than a late Day 3 pick to the Vikings for J.J. McCarthy. With such a low price, New York should be happy to bring in some competition for the vacated QB1 position.
