Sophie Cunningham’s role has taken a hit recently, bottoming out with just seven minutes on the floor against Washington.
Over her last three outings, her playing time dropped from 20 and 14 minutes down to single digits. She failed to score against the Mystics, going 0-for-2 with no stats across the board and finishing a team-low minus-11.
However, Stephanie White has given us some insights into her thinking and decision-making, speaking in her postgame presser after the loss to the Mystics.
She said: “Yeah, I don’t know if you ever find out what’s perfect. You know, I think we needed some defensive help in that ballgame, and so we were searching a little bit. It feels a little bit, that game felt a little bit like early in the year with such a long break and, you know, trying to figure out, you know, what group could give us the best opportunity in those moments.
“But we also have to find out what it’s going to look like for us in the playoffs. What’s it going to look like when we need to get stops if we’re not getting it done on the defensive end of the floor? What’s it going to look like in certain situations in a game where we need more spacing on the floor? Can we be able to play multiple possessions before we can get somebody else back in?
“So I think there are some of those things that will happen in the next few games as we head into the playoffs.”
Stephanie White’s comments make one thing clear. If you aren’t stringing together stops, you aren’t playing. By framing her lineup changes around defensive help and playoff readiness, White essentially sent a message that reputation won’t guarantee minutes.
This leaves Sophie Cunningham on thin ice if her defensive execution doesn’t pick up fast.
