Since making the jump from the sidelines to NBC as an analyst, former NFL coach Mike Tomlin has been excelling. But should fans expect him to hop into the booth as a color commentator?

According to Awful Announcing, not in the immediate future. There has been speculation that Tomlin could fill in for Cris Collinsworth — who is signed through the 2030 Super Bowl — when he takes time off or when NBC airs two games.

That is not on the table this season. According to the report, Tomlin “prefers working in the studio over calling games in a booth,” so the network hasn’t thought about putting him in the booth during the 2026 season.

However, he could change his mind. Tomlin signed a multiyear deal with NBC, and it’s reportedly “backloaded to incentivize the former coach to stay on TV” despite any interest he may garner from NFL teams looking for coaches.

Tomlin is best known for coaching the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2007 to 2025, winning a Super Bowl with the team. However, his tenure with the team came to an end following the 2025 season. The Steelers made the playoffs with Aaron Rodgers. They were blown out by the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round, however.

He landed a job with NBC Sports as an analyst in April 2026. He made his debut during the 2026 NFL season. Tomlin is on the Football Night in America panel during Sunday Night Football, and he has a news segment during NBC’s halftime show.

It sounds like he will continue to be an analyst for the foreseeable future. He can only get better with more experience. The next Sunday Night Football matchups include the Los Angeles Chargers vs. the Denver Broncos and the Detroit Lions vs. the Carolina Panthers.
