Emmet Sheehan Strengthens Case For Dodgers’ Postseason Roster

Los Angeles Dodgers starter Emmet Sheehan made a 5.1-inning relief outing Sunday, and dominated the whole way through it, further strengthening his case to make the team’s postseason roster.

Sheehan went down to Triple-A after the Dodgers acquired Tarik Skubal at the trade deadline, but put together a strong month in Triple-A and hasn’t looked back. Through four appearances with Oklahoma City, Sheehan has a 1.50 ERA through 18 innings, striking out 24 batters.

He brought the same results back to MLB when the Dodgers recalled him early in September, as he allowed just one run through 5.2 innings in his return start before holding the Miami Marlins scoreless over six innings one week ago.

The Dodgers sent Sheehan back down to the minors last Monday, but brought him up for Sunday’s game.

How Did Emmet Sheehan Pitch Sunday?

Sheehan had yet another dominant outing Sunday, this time coming against the San Francisco Giants.

He threw 5.1 innings after coming in to relieve Jack Dreyer, allowing just one hit and one walk on the day while holding his opponents scoreless. He also struck out nine batters during the outing, though he didn’t earn a win for his efforts.

The right-hander’s strong performance dropped his season ERA to 4.57, which is the best it’s been since the beginning of June. On the year, he has 132 strikeouts over the course of 112.1 innings pitched. Despite his difficult season, Sheehan still has a solid 27.1% strikeout rate, and ranks in the top 10% of MLB in chase and whiff rate.

What Role Will Emmet Sheehan Fill in the Postseason?

If he makes the roster, Sheehan will almost definitely not serve as a starter. The Dodgers have a solid four-man rotation of Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Skubal, and manager Dave Roberts revealed Roki Sasaki would also be heading into the bullpen for October.

Sheehan came out of the bullpen for the Dodgers last postseason as well, and while his results weren’t the best, he still played an important part in their championship campaign. Whatever his role may be, Sheehan will definitely do whatever it takes to help the Dodgers as they search for a historic three-peat this postseason.
