Oklahoma football came away with a 14-6 win against New Mexico, but it wasn’t the best performance for the team. Head coach Brent Venables definitely wasn’t satisfied with what he saw, especially from the offense. After the game, Venables was asked if he thinks the offense has anything to hang its hat on.

The coach was as honest as he could be.
“No. Did you watch the game?” Venables said via George Stoia III of On3.

Oklahoma finished with 299 total yards of offense, but finished with seven penalties. John Mateer had a solid game with 238 passing yards for two touchdowns and two interceptions, but it was obvious that the team wasn’t able to get much going on that side of the ball.
If New Mexico made a few more plays, there’s a chance that they could’ve come up with a big upset, but Oklahoma’s defense did what they were supposed to do.
All eyes were on offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle after the game, and many are questioning if he’s the man for the job to help Oklahoma. Venables still has faith in the play caller, and he showed that in the presser as well.
“I’m not going to talk about confidence. He’s our offensive coordinator… We have to be better,” Venables said.
It’ll be interesting to see what Oklahoma does to turn things around next week when they face Georgia, but that’s not going to be an easy matchup. The offense has to find a way to get into a rhythm, and it’ll start with Mateer and how he commands the offense.
