Commanders' Amik Robertson says the defense must be 'more detailed'

In the Washington Commanders’ Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Commanders struggled on both sides of the ball early. Their timing was off, and they didn’t always seem to know where they were supposed to be. They missed tackles, lost marks, and the Eagles capitalized on every mistake. They got out to an early lead, and the Commanders never recovered.

This week, starting cornerback Amik Robertson was asked what the defense needs to do to clean up before their Week 2 meeting with the Dallas Cowboys.

“Just be more detailed,” Robertson replied. “Like I said, it’s stuff that we can fix. It ain’t like they was out-physicaling us or they was just better. Most of the plays that they got, you know, we gave to them, right? I mean, we all saw the tape. And, you know, you learn, move on, take the accountability, move on. That’s the thing about this game, man, especially playing on the defensive side of the ball, you gotta have a resilient mindset. When s*** goes bad, or s*** goes good, you gotta be able to have that mindset to stay neutral. Next-play mentality. And that’s the mentality that I have, the defense have, Mikey (Sainristil) have. So, right now we moved on from that; we focused on Dallas.

Mike Sainristil is one of the players who desperately needs to embrace the ‘next-play’ mentality. He often looked lost throughout the Commanders’ loss and was the worst-graded defensive player by Pro Football Focus. He’s not the only one who needs to forget the game, though. Maybe not forget it, but learn from it and move on.

How they played and why they lost can’t be the focus. The focus must be on improving, fixing what didn’t work, and making sure mistakes aren’t repeated.

Next-play mentality loaded. Time to go to work.
