Deion Sanders was unhappy with Colorado Buffaloes players laughing after Saturday’s 41-7 college football loss to Northwestern.

The Buffaloes entered the game 2-0 but struggled immediately against the Wildcats. Colorado committed three first-half turnovers and entered halftime facing a 21-0 deficit.
Julian “JuJu” Lewis completed 19 of 29 passes for 168 yards and one touchdown. His 50-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Williams provided Colorado’s only points.

Sanders said he noticed some players laughing after the defeat. The Colorado coach made clear that reaction did not sit well with him.
“You did see a couple of guys that I just got on, because I don’t understand how much – how you can have joy in a loss, especially when I’m upset and I’m walking right behind you,” Sanders said. “I don’t understand that.
I can’t never understand that because I want to win every darn thing.
“And I can’t understand how in the world – do you find joy, or you could find a laughing matter, when I’m right behind you walking in. I don’t understand that.”
Sanders said he addressed the players and planned to hold them accountable, and said, “I addressed it and I’m gonna put my foot in it, not on it.”
The response reflects the larger issue Colorado faces after a poor showing. The Buffaloes struggled with ball security, offensive consistency and their response once Northwestern took control.

JaQuail Smith led Colorado with 91 rushing yards, while Williams finished with 88 receiving yards. Those individual performances could not offset the team’s broader problems.
The turnover margin became the clearest separator. Northwestern turned Colorado mistakes into points, while the Buffaloes failed to create enough offensive pressure after falling behind.
Sanders now has a short turnaround before Colorado opens Big 12 play against Baylor. The coaching staff must address execution while also resetting the team’s approach after its first major setback.

Sanders has already recognized that there were “some guys fighting through it, offensively and defensively.” So, his message points toward accountability from the players who took it lightly as Colorado moves into conference play. The Buffaloes need cleaner execution and a stronger response when games turn against them.
The Northwestern loss exposed more than technical issues, so now, how Colorado responds against Baylor will provide an early measure of the team’s discipline and structure.
