Bears’ hype train off the tracks after disastrous Week 2 loss

The Denver Broncos’ single-season scoring record could be safe for now. The Minnesota Vikings beat the Chicago Bears, 9-3, in Week 2. And Chicago’s star quarterback, Caleb Williams, went down with a hamstring injury.

This comes after a week of hype that the city of Chicago has not seen in years. The Bears were coming off a 59-point performance in Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers.
The hype was palpable after the Bears scored 59 points against the Carolina Panthers in their season opener. Coach Ben Johnson had said during the offseason that the team wanted to win the Super Bowl. He also said they wanted to have the highest-scoring offense ever and they backed that up in Week 1.

People were doing the math to see what it would take for the Bears to break the 2013 Denver Broncos’ record. The Broncos had scored 606 points. The Bears were on pace for many more.
On his podcast this week Adam Schefter expressed disbelief that anyone could think that Johnson and the Bears might slow down. He boldly proclaimed, “Regress my a–. I mean, give me a break.”
Caleb Williams talked about how the team had a lot to clean up after Week 1. He also suggested it might be their worst game of the season.
A Chicago hot dog stand said they would give away free hot dogs if Colston Loveland scored two touchdowns in Week 2. The Bears’ tight end had 58 catches and scored six touchdowns as a rookie, but didn’t register a catch in Week 1. Surely he would break out in Week 2 and give fans something to cheer about. Instead he had one catch for three yards.
So there will be no free hot dogs. And the Broncos’ record looks safe for now.
The ’13 Broncos didn’t score fewer than 27 points in a game until they were blown out by the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII. The Bears are now on pace for only 527 points this season, which would still be very good and tie them for the 14th most all-time with the 2018 Los Angeles Rams.
