What happened the last time Texas A&M played Kentucky?
A 3-2 Texas A&M team entered the game against the undefeated No. 13 Wildcats as a slight favorite despite the difference in their records. The Aggies had already faced No. 2 Clemson and No. 1 Alabama, while Kentucky arrived at Kyle Field looking to begin a season 6-0 for the first time since 1950.
Mike Elko was in his first season coordinating Texas A&M’s defense, and his unit delivered one of its best performances of the year. Kentucky finished with only 178 total yards and never ran an offensive play on A&M’s side of the 50-yard line. Star running back Benny Snell was held to 60 yards on 13 carries after entering the game as the SEC’s leading rusher.
Texas A&M running back Trayveon Williams carried the offense with 210 all-purpose yards, including 138 rushing and 72 receiving. The Aggies led 14-7 in the fourth quarter before Kentucky returned a Kellen Mond fumble for a touchdown to force overtime.
Kentucky opened overtime by missing a 43-yard field goal off the crossbar. Four plays later, Williams ended the game with a 10-yard touchdown run, giving Texas A&M a 20-14 victory.
Texas A&M-Kentucky football series history
Kentucky won the first meeting 10-7 at Kyle Field in 1952. The Aggies returned the favor the following season with a 7-6 road victory. The programs then went 65 years without meeting before their 2018 SEC matchup.
That victory came during Elko’s first season as Texas A&M’s defensive coordinator. Eight years later, he will face Kentucky as the Aggies’ head coach while attempting to extend A&M’s series winning streak to three.
