Eskom electricity tariffs: Public given until October to comment

South Africans have until 2 October to comment on Eskom’s proposed electricity tariff structure for the 2027/28 financial year.
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has already determined Eskom’s allowable revenue for the period.

That decision will result in an average electricity price increase of 8.83%.
Eskom direct customers are expected to pay the increase from 1 April 2027.
The current consultation does not reopen the 8.83% decision. Instead, NERSA wants public input on how Eskom plans to structure its tariffs across different customer groups.
What the 8.83% increase means
The 8.83% figure is an average.
Some households and businesses could pay more or less depending on their tariff category, electricity use and connection type.
NERSA adjusted Eskom’s allowable revenue after correcting calculation errors linked to the utility’s Sixth Multi-Year Price Determination process.
The regulator and Eskom later reached a settlement over the errors.
In its settlement announcement, NERSA said part of the additional revenue would fall into the 2027/28 financial year, resulting in the average 8.83% increase.
Public can submit comments
NERSA has invited written submissions on Eskom’s proposed tariff structure.
Submissions close at 16:00 on 2 October 2026.
NERSA will consider the submissions before it makes a final decision on Eskom’s tariff structure for 2027/28.
