Charlotte athlete survives alligator attack during Ironman practice

A local triathlon coach is recovering from an alligator attack, The Charlotte Observer reported.

Jonathan Bruney, of Charlotte, was swimming in the Savannah River in North Augusta, South Carolina, during an Ironman practice when the gator latched onto his arm.

Bruney says he had seconds to react.“So just grabbed, put my hand on the snout, reached up, and then pushed my thumb into his eyeball, and he released,” said Bruney.

Bruney was able to get back to the dock.

A teammate used the cord from a swim buoy to make a tourniquet.

His doctors said that only skin and fat were damaged.

Bruney must stay out of the water for three to four weeks, but he still plans to race.
