“Everything got washed away in a matter of hours,” said Mahesh Barhoi, a resident of Nepalikhuti village in Assam’s Sivasagar district, near the border with Nagaland.

When devastating floods swept through the district in July, they left a trail of destruction by killing nearly 50 people and wiping out entire villages like Nepalikhuti.

While Assam battles floods every year, the July catastrophe was different – Nepalikhuti had never seen a flood before.
