This is a Giants team that's been outscored 21-8 in their last two games, so it's clear there's a major need for change.
Left-handed pitcher Matt Wilkinson has officially been selected to the Major League roster while fellow lefty Reiver Sanmartin has been optioned to Triple-A Sacramento.
Elsewhere, they added a bit of depth with another lefty in Philip Abner, someone who was claimed off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Sadly for Abner, he'll be starting his Giants career at the Triple-A level.
Finally, the Giants announced that both catcher Daniel Susac and outfielder Harrison Bader have been transferred to the 60-day Injured List.
Bader and Susac are likely out for the yearWednesday, Aug. 19 marks the date the Giants likely pulled the plug on either Bader or Susac returning this season.
NBC Sports discussed Bader's designation as a "paperwork move," which paves the way for "Tugboat" Wilkinson to join the 40-man roster.
Obviously, Wilkinson isn't going anywhere. The team called him up for a reason, and that's yet another explanation as to why they wanted to bring in a guy like Abner to pitch at Sacramento.
Susac, 25, has been out dealing with a knee injury. The California native's rookie campaign has been cut short after 144 at-bats. In those 53 games, he slashed .243/.289/.375 with a .664 OPS and a 0.7 WAR.
As for Bader, nothing came easy for the 32-year-old this season. He has been out with a foot injury, but it's not like he was adding much to the Giants lineup with his 0.2 WAR and near-career-low .557 OPS.
What to expect from WilkinsonThe biggest bit of news that came out of this announcement is the fact that Wilkinson is officially on the 40-man. The 23-year-old has yet to make his MLB debut, but when he does, it'll be one fans won't soon forget.
Tugboat sports a 6-6 record across three minor league levels this season. When specifically looking at his time in Sacramento, he put up a 3-4 record with a 5.15 ERA in 10 starts, which he turned into 43.2 innings.
This Giants pitching staff continues to get younger, and that's to be expected now that they no longer have Robbie Ray and Tyler Mahle.
Wilkinson will give this team another left-handed starter, and his rise through the minors has been incredible to watch, knowing he was a 10th-round pick, coincidentally, by the Guardians, back in 2023.
