Are the New England Patriots the Super Bowl contenders that they were last year heading into the 2026 NFL season?
That remains to be seen, with the new season just over four weeks away from getting underway. The Patriots added to their roster this offseason. However, other teams in the league became stronger contenders as well, making next season one that will require the Patriots to play outstanding football to come out on top in the AFC and ultimately win the Super Bowl.

NFL.com’s Nick Shook strikingly ranked the Patriots No. 12 overall in his power rankings prior to the start of preseason.
“New England rode a dreamlike turnaround to a Super Bowl LX appearance on a vehicle that was all but guaranteed to swap out a few key parts once the journey ended,” Shook said. “That said, the team still has MVP runner-up Drake Maye, added star receiver A.J. Brown to a WR group that also welcomed Romeo Doubs, and bolstered the offensive line with free agent pickup Alijah Vera-Tucker and first-round selection Caleb Lomu. There's still plenty of reason to feel good about the Pats' outlook; I just need them to prove doubters wrong before moving them up in these rankings.”
The Patriots had one of the biggest offseasons in the league this year. Their additions in the open market and the draft upgraded their offense on paper, while the defense retained its strength.
There may not be 11 teams that are better than the Patriots heading into next season. However, New England does need to excel against its tougher schedule this year with its new-look roster to come out on top in the AFC and the league as a whole.
