Michigan basketball rounds out staff with development director

Michigan basketball has added Bertram "Buzzy" Caruthers as its new director of player development.
Caruthers' name is listed in the U-M athletics directory, though no official announcement has been made by the program. He was most recently hired as an assistant coach at Ball State in 2024, and before that he had been at Missouri State (2022-24) and Nebraska (2019-22), where he was the Huskers' director of player development.

Michigan now has added three assistant coaches in Mike Martin (Brown), Dylan Murphy (Osceola Magic) and Caruthers. They replace the voids left by Justin Joyner (Oregon State), Drew Williamson (Dallas Mavericks) and Mike Boynton Jr., who of course took over as U-M's head coach in place of Dusty May earlier this summer.
A Kansas City native, Caruthers started his coaching career at K.C.'s Barstow High School (2007-11). Caruthers was also a founding member of the MoKan Elite, helping create one of the top travel programs in the country. He also spent a year at his alma mater, Sumner Academy of Arts and Science (2011-12).
Michigan is just more than a week away from its international trip to Lithuania and Croatia (Aug. 21-29). By the time U-M returns, it will be less than two months out from its exhibition games, which includes a powerhouse matchup against Houston in Grand Rapids at Van Andel Arena on Oct. 25.
