Dee Alford explains his important role in new Bills defense

The Buffalo Bills moved on from longtime cornerback Taron Johnson this offseason and replaced him with Dee Alford on paper this offseason via free agency.
Johnson was a fan favorite in Buffalo but there is an important reasoning behind that decision.

With the team firing former head coach Sean McDermott and hiring defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard, the Bills' scheme has changed on defense. Johnson fit McDermott's and Alford fits Leonhard's.
"(Johnson) was more like a linebacker guy," Alford said. "For me, I'm more of a cover guy."
Make no mistake, it's much more important than Alford makes it sound.
“Big picture scheme, we do some unique things from a motion-adjustment standpoint, and communication at that nickel position is crucial,” Leonhard said via video conference. “With this league, versatility of the tight ends and so many receivers that now will go into the slot, you need a starter in there."
In his own right, Alford had a positive season with the Atlanta Falcons last year as well. In 16 games, he had a career-high three interceptions and 13 passes defended.
