Challenging opener sets up Oakwood football for continued growth

FITHIAN, Ill. (WCIA) -- The Comets will hit the ground running this football season with a tough conference game to kick off the season.
"When we looked at BHRA and we went and saw that that game moved from week nine to week one, we got excited about that and said, you know what, let's bring it up," head coach Cameron Lee said. "Let's bring them on. Let's make this, you know, a challenge."

Oakwood ended its regular season last year with a win over the Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin Blue Devils, capping off a 7-2 season before an early playoff exit.
Moving to Class 1A ahead of the 2025 season has led to a new kind of growth in the program.
"I came here thinking like, okay, we're going to get the numbers up and every year, you know, we're going to prove it that way, and to be honest, it hasn't been in the numbers," Lee said. "It's been in the quality of the players and then just the overall quality of the program. Our average player is significantly and in a higher place than we were five years ago."
"50% of it is just all mental, you know," senior quarterback Alex Wallace said. "It's a really long summer. It might go by really fast, but it's really hard to show up every day, and get up at 5:30 in the morning and come here every morning. It's pretty hard, but, you know, we got a job to do, and we look forward to coming here."
Oakwood will host BHRA under the lights on Saturday, August 22.
