Clemsonfootball enters fall camp without a shortage of options in the backfield, and Dabo Swinney expects several of them to have a role this season.
For now, though, Gideon Davidson is getting the first opportunity.

The sophomore will begin camp working as Clemson’s first-team running back after showing Swinney significant growth since his freshman season.
“It is going to start with Gideon. He has really done a great job,” Swinney said.
Davidson isn’t the only player Clemson will be evaluating closely over the next several weeks. Chris Johnson Jr. joined the program this offseason after playing at Miami and SMU, giving the Tigers another experienced option.
David Eziomume also returns, while Jay Haynes and Jarvis Green are back after injuries wiped out their opportunities last season.
That depth has Swinney optimistic about what Clemson can get from the position.
“I believe we have a better running back room than what people think or know,” Swinney said. “I am hoping to see what I believe is accurate.”

Swinney is particularly interested in seeing how the group looks now that Clemson has everyone available.
“Gideon is experienced now and confident. We got this silent assassin in here, C.J., that does not say much, but he shows up,” Swinney said. “So, it is going to be fun. It is going to be fun to watch that group. It is going to be a competitive group.”
Davidson owns the early lead, but Clemson’s plans appear unlikely to revolve around just one player. Swinney believes all five running backs can contribute before the season is over.
