Boy, 16, pointed gun at arresting officers: Toronto Police

A 16-year-old boy has been nabbed by Toronto Police after a loaded gun was pointed at officers attempting to arrest him Thursday during a firearms investigation in North York.

The teen’s arrest comes weeks after a 21-year-old man was also charged in the same probe.

According to police, both accused are under firearm and ammunition prohibition orders while the teen was also on probation.

Police said, shortly before 9:30 p.m. on July 15, officers from the 31 Division Major Crime Unit (MCU) were in the Driftwood Ave. and Finch Ave. W. area for an investigation.

It is alleged that the suspect was walking with another male, and when they saw officers in a police vehicle in the area, they began running. Cops began a pursuit on foot and observed one of the males throw a firearm, police said.

One of the suspects was arrested while the other escaped the area.

Loaded firearm recovered

Police said officers recovered a loaded firearm and an extended magazine along with another loaded extended magazine in a satchel carried by the arrested individual.

During the foot pursuit and arrest, two officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries, cops added.

Shevontae Stewart-Wilson, of Toronto, was charged earlier with unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, careless storage of a firearm, weapon, or prohibited device, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, carrying a concealed weapon, three counts of possession of a prohibited device or ammunition knowing its possession is prohibited, and two counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order.

Police said MCU officers were in the Jane St. and Finch Ave. W. area on Thursday in an attempt to locate and arrest the other suspect.

Youth pointed gun, cops allege

It is alleged that officers located the male youth as he exited an elevator, and while attempting to arrest him, the youth pointed a loaded gun at the cops.

According to police, one officer quickly subdued the youth and he was arrested. No injuries were sustained by the suspect or the arresting officers.

A loaded firearm, a quantity of oxycodone, and Canadian cash was seized by the officers, police said.

The youth, of Toronto, has been charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, careless storage of a firearm, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a prohibited device or ammunition knowing its possession is prohibited, two counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, pointing a firearm, possession of proceeds of crime under $5,000, possession of Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

Chief praises officers

“Having a loaded firearm pointed at them highlights the dangers our officers confront in their work and is an example of crime prevention and intervention in action,” Police Chief Myron Demkiw said Saturday in a statement shared to social media.

“Every crime gun our officers seize helps to prevent untold future violence and makes our communities safer. Thanks to their outstanding and courageous efforts, more than 300 illegal firearms have been removed from Toronto’s streets so far this year.”
