The first week of an NFL team’s training camp is a nice ramp-up period for everyone. The coaches are getting used to running drills and calling plays again, the training staff is back into the swing of things, and of course, the players need time to readjust to the pace of practices. But once the first handful of practices are over and the pads come on, it’s a different ballgame.

For the Green Bay Packers, that day is today. After four practices over the last five days in shorts, today is when the real work begins, as the team will don full pads for the first time this season.
It’s a big change, and one that often brings some surprises, both positive and negative. It’s not uncommon for a player to go relatively unnoticed early in training camp, only to look like a totally different player when the contact ramps up. This year, it would be great if the Packers could find a couple of those players starting today, particularly among their deep but young group of pass rushers and their not-so-deep (but still young) tight end room.
This week’s practices will build towards Family Night on Friday evening, after which the focus begins to shift to preseason games starting a week later. For now, let’s enjoy the sounds and sights of the first padded practice period of the summer.

I’ve spoken about this on podcasts and with fans of other teams a lot this offseason — namely, that this spring was all about figuring out who the true core of this team would be moving forward and letting those players who weren’t a part of that core move on.
