Rumors have been circulating in the media, suggesting that the Houston Rockets’ superstar Kevin Durant might be headed out of Houston and on his way to Golden State to join the Warriors.

The Warriors are currently the only team not to acquire a player via trade this off-season, and they likely need to make a move if they want to be true contenders in a stacked and competitive Western Conference. Their main trade target is supposedly Durant, which would reunite him with Steph Curry.
With the Western Conference being incredibly cut-throat, the Warriors likely need to bring in an elite player if they want to compete. To add to that, Curry is reaching the end of his career as he is currently 38-years old. If he wants to get another ring, he will have to do so sooner rather than later.
However, if the Warriors expect to sign Durant, they will have to make an enticing offer. In order to do so, they would likely have to get rid of one of their promising young players along with one or more first-round draft picks. This is because the departure of Durant would leave Houston more inclined to focus on building a strong long-term franchise instead of focusing on a win-now approach.
There is also a possibility that the Warriors might be better off waiting for Durant’s contract to expire and then sign him as a free agent. Durant’s current contract ends after this upcoming 2026-27 season, but it does include a player option for the season after. Waiting for his contract to expire would allow the Warriors to not give away draft capital, but it will also mean that both Curry and Durant have an entire year less left in their careers.
Houston has a very promising young core, but also has enough potential to have a chance to be true contenders in the near future. Because of this, management is currently balancing both strategies by working towards the long-term while also adding pieces to increase their short-term potential.
For example, the Rockets have shown that they are fully dedicated to the young core and the future of the franchise by offering Tari Eason a new 5-year contract. They have also declared that Amen Thompson is the only untouchable player on the entire roster.
On the other hand, when Houston acquired Kevin Durant in July of 2025, they made a big investment with a win-now approach and hopes of receiving short-term rewards for the big financial risk involved.
