DAYTONA BEACH — Vince Carter and crew have made tweaks through the decades.

“You have to change some things so it’s not boring (for the returners),” he said.
But the principles of the annual Vince Carter Youth Basketball Academy remain the same.
This year’s camp started July 27 and wraps up July 30 at Mainland High School. More than 110 campers attended, up a few from last summer’s total, and went through various stations centered on basketball skills, teamwork and life skills.
Carter and his fellow counselors prioritize fun.
“It’s not an elite camp where you’re going to leave here being ranked in the top 100 or being ranked in the country,” said Carter, a 2024 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee and a 1995 Mainland graduate. “That’s not what this is about. But this is a skills camp where you learn the skills, where you can take these things back home and work on them yourself.”
Carter still enjoys hosting the camp.
It began when he was in college at North Carolina under the name of his high school coach, Charles Brinkerhoff. Brinkerhoff served as a counselor again in 2026.
“Here we are 27, 29, 30 years later and still doing the same thing,” Carter said with a smile.
The event continued throughout his 22-year NBA career, took a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19 and came back strong the last five summers.
