“Needs to Be Rescinded”: Caitlin Clark's 7th Technical Draws Strong Appeal From WNBA Analyst

Caitlin Clark is now just one technical foul away from suspension after receiving her seventh in the Fever’s most recent 123-88 blowout win over the Connecticut Sun. Many would argue that several of these technicals have been questionable, based on the actions that prompted them. But if there is one among the seven that appears the least justifiable, it is this most recent one. In fact, WNBA analyst Rosalina Lee goes as far as saying it should be rescinded entirely.
“Caitlin goes to Saniya, ‘Look at the scoreboard, look at the scoreboard.’ And she gets a tech for that, which is like crazy,” Lee said on Thursday’s episode of her podcast. “Me personally, I think this one needs to be rescinded. It was soft. Just too soft.”

The incident that led to that foul occurred with 28.8 seconds left in the third quarter, with the Fever holding a commanding 95-67 lead over the Connecticut Sun. After a personal foul on Olivia Nelson-Ododa, Clark got into a brief verbal exchange with Sun guard Saniya Rivers, who had been claiming she was “locking up” the Fever star. And as Lee described, Clark responded by gesturing towards the scoreboards and shouting: “Check the scoreboard.” That exchange prompted officials to assess double technical fouls on both players. While the tech fouls canceled each other for a trip to the charity line, Clark went ahead to make two free throws for the earlier foul.
For Lee, trash talk like this is a routine part of basketball, and officials routinely let it go, especially with no physical altercation or long quarrel occurring. And so, in her view, what happened in that exchange was nowhere near sufficient enough to warrant a technical foul. The score said everything Caitlin Clark needed to say. She just pointed it out.
With that foul now on her record, Caitlin Clark sits at seven technical fouls this season. Under league rules, an eighth foul will trigger an automatic one-game suspension. And every two technical fouls after that eighth will result in another. Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White has acknowledged the reality of the situation, stating that if it comes to that, Clark will essentially have to be strategic about which games she chooses to play from that point forward.
However, the Indiana Fever have officially appealed the technical foul to the WNBA, seeking to have it rescinded and protect Clark from the suspension that now looms just one tech foul away. Attempts to have previous ones rescinded so far this season have been met with frustration. Statistically, only four out of 144 technical fouls called league-wide this season have actually been rescinded.
Hopefully the Fever appeal succeeds. If that happens, what is beginning to feel increasingly inevitable may at least be delayed a little longer.
