Pirates Roster Moves: Pitching Prospects Kelly, Harrington Recalled

The Pirates continue to look for answers in their bullpen and they’ll turn to a pair of prospects in their latest efforts. Right-handed pitchers Antwone Kelly and Thomas Harrington are being recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis, a source confirmed to Pittsburgh Baseball Now.

Kelly, who is considered the organization’s seventh-best prospect by MLB Pipeline, made his MLB debut on June 12 against the Marlins and allowed two runs in 2.1 innings of relief. It was his lone appearance before he was optioned back to Indianapolis.
In 17 appearances/12 starts at Triple-A this season, Kelly is 4-5 with a 4.85 ERA. The 5-foot-10 right-hander has totaled 68.2 innings with 33 walks and 54 strikeouts with opponents hitting .262 against him.
Harrington made three appearances/one start for the Pirates last season and went 0-1 with a 15.58 ERA and one save. He hasn’t pitched for Pittsburgh yet this season.
Harrington, ranked No. 12 on Pittsburgh’s top 30 prospects list, is 1-5 with a 6.52 ERA in 20 appearances/six starts with Indianapolis this season. In 58 innings, he’s allowed 66 hits, walked 26 and struck out 56.
The Pirates’ bullpen was tasked with covering six innings in Thursday’s loss to the Braves at PNC Park. On the season, Pittsburgh’s relievers have combined for a 4.53 ERA, which ranks 23rd in MLB and 12th in the National League.
There is not yet word on what the corresponding moves will be to get Kelly and Harrington on the active roster.
