Analyst says 49ers' Brock Purdy will have a better season than this QB

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield are often discussed on the same tier of passer because of their size and production despite their different levels of experience and pedigree in the NFL.

And now, as both head into the 2026 season, the debate over who will have a better upcoming season continues to rage. NFL analysts are weighing in, and Fox Sports Chris Broussard has made a definitive statement on the matchup between Purdy and Mayfield.

"I think Purdy is going to be more accurate. I think he's going to have a better passer rating and a better touchdown percentage, and he's going to get more wins than Baker," Broussard said. "So I think Purdy is going to have a great year. ... Mike Evans there, and even Christian Kirk. Like, I just think he's going—there's going to now be some stability in his receiving corps. Ricky Pearsall, I would—I really like. We'll see if he's healthy, but I believe Kirk and Evans will be there healthy. [Tight end George] Kittle obviously a nice security blanket, and then some."

Broussard’s projection rests heavily on the upgraded infrastructure surrounding the San Francisco 49ers signal-caller. Most notable is the addition of Evans, who previously served as Mayfield’s elite WR1 in Tampa Bay. Pairing Evans alongside reliable weapons like Kirk and Kittle gives Purdy an explosive aerial arsenal designed to maximize efficiency, as well as Pearsall, 2026 second-round rookie De'Zhaun Stribling and running back Christian McCaffrey.

Looking back at the 2025 season, both quarterbacks navigated vastly different paths. Purdy started nine games for San Francisco, going 7-2 and piloting them to a strong playoff push while completing nearly 70% of his passes for 2,167 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Despite missing chunks of time, his efficiency per dropback remained among the league’s elite.

Mayfield, meanwhile, carried a much heavier volume for the Buccaneers. He played all 17 regular-season games, leading the Bucs to an 8-9 record. Mayfield threw for 3,693 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

While Mayfield outpaced Purdy in total volume due to availability, his lower touchdown percentage and lower completion rate (63.2%) are exactly the areas where Broussard expects Purdy to pull ahead.

With Mayfield now entering a high-stakes contract year without his favorite target, the stability shifts toward San Francisco. Backed by a healthy roster and Mayfield’s former top weapon in Evans, Purdy is primed to eclipse his counterpart in efficiency, accuracy, and ultimately, wins.
