Liverpool’s search for attacking reinforcements continues to generate speculation, with Bradley Barcola once again emerging as one of the standout names linked with a move to Anfield. While Paris Saint-Germain have publicly projected strength, recent comments from both the player and respected transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano suggest the situation is far from settled.
Speaking on his latest transfer update, Romano analysed Barcola’s latest media appearance with the France national team and questioned whether the winger had fully committed his future to the French champions.
As reported by Romano on his YouTube channel, Barcola was asked directly about his future during a press conference but refused to provide any guarantees over where he will be playing next season.
Instead, Romano highlighted the significance of the player’s response.
“If a player wants to stay, if a player is sure he’s going to stay, a player is going to speak with the press conference, interview, whatever, and say, ‘I’m staying’.”
According to Romano, Barcola deliberately avoided making such a declaration, leaving the door open to potential movement later in the transfer window.
That alone does not mean a transfer is imminent, but it does reinforce the idea that Liverpool remain attentive to developments.
Romano identifies Liverpool as leading admirers
Romano has consistently maintained throughout recent months that Liverpool’s admiration for Barcola has never disappeared.
Despite repeated claims elsewhere that the winger was unavailable, Romano reiterated his long-standing position.
“I told you this for months. I always told you don’t forget Barcola. Don’t forget Barcola.”
He then delivered perhaps his clearest update yet on Liverpool’s interest.
“Liverpool have Barcola on top of their list. So Barcola is always on Liverpool’s list.”
Those comments underline the importance Liverpool place on the 22-year-old as they assess options capable of adding pace, creativity and directness to Arne Slot’s forward line.
However, Romano was equally clear that admiration alone will not complete the transfer.
“So Barcola is now a serious target for Liverpool. But it’s on Liverpool to depend financially what they can do in order to reach an agreement with Paris.”
That financial hurdle remains substantial.
Paris Saint-Germain have invested heavily in Barcola’s development since signing him from Lyon and there is no suggestion they will entertain offers below their valuation. The lack of agreement over a contract extension during the past year, though, creates an interesting backdrop should a significant bid arrive.
Financial challenge could define transfer window
Romano also explained why he believes movement remains possible despite widespread reports suggesting Barcola is untouchable.
He stated that discussions over a new contract have failed to produce an agreement over the past ten months, despite extension talks originally being planned last summer.
That situation increases the possibility of negotiations if Liverpool decide the France international is worth a major investment.
The challenge is obvious.
Any deal would require Liverpool not only to satisfy PSG financially but also convince the French club that selling one of their brightest young attackers makes strategic sense.
It is not impossible, but it is undoubtedly one of the most expensive potential deals of the summer.
Liverpool’s recruitment team have shown patience in previous windows and may yet wait to see whether PSG soften their position as the market develops.
Transfer race could intensify before deadline
Liverpool are not the only club monitoring Barcola’s situation.
Romano acknowledged that Arsenal have also considered the France international, although he stressed that their immediate priority remains Morgan Rogers.
“For Arsenal, the number one target remains Morgan Rogers.”
Only if Arsenal fail to strike an agreement would Barcola become a more realistic alternative for Mikel Arteta’s side.
For Liverpool, that potentially reduces competition in the short term, although circumstances can change quickly once clubs begin making formal offers.
At present, Romano’s reporting suggests Liverpool are maintaining their interest while evaluating whether a deal is financially achievable.
There is no indication that negotiations have reached an advanced stage, but equally there is nothing to suggest Barcola’s future has been completely settled in Paris.
With the player declining to publicly commit himself and contract talks having stalled, Liverpool will continue monitoring events closely.
Whether that interest develops into a formal approach may ultimately depend on PSG’s willingness to negotiate and Liverpool’s readiness to commit the sizeable fee likely to be required.
For now, Barcola remains one of the most closely watched names on Liverpool’s shortlist, with Romano’s latest update offering fresh encouragement that the story is far from over.
