The Dusty May era officially began in Dallas on Monday as the Dallas Mavericks introduced their new head coach during an introductory press conference. May accepted the position after the Mavericks parted ways with Jason Kidd.
The Mavericks failed to reach the playoffs last season. However, May wasted no time expressing confidence in the team's future. During his introductory press conference, he made it clear that he believes Dallas has the talent and mindset to exceed expectations much sooner than many anticipate.
“I think sooner than later, I think we have a lot of guys, we have some veterans that have done it before in pivotal moments. And we have some young guys that are on the cusp of breakthrough seasons, and taken a lot of pride on being a part of teams where I felt like we've all overachieved,” May said.
“And so if we were all committed to playing incredibly unselfish basketball, competing at the highest level, and really sharing the success and caring about each other, then we'll surpass all expectations.”
In Dallas, May inherits a roster featuring foundational pieces like Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, reigning Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg. The new head coach will also reunite with big man Morez Johnson Jr., whom he coached at Michigan. The Mavericks selected Morez with the No. 9 overall pick in last week's NBA Draft.
Meanwhile, May arrives in Dallas after engineering a remarkable turnaround at Michigan. In just two seasons, he compiled a 64-13 record while leading the Wolverines to their first national championship in three decades. After transforming one storied program, May now begins his next challenge with hopes of restoring the Mavericks to championship contention.
