Sean McVay is certain to retire with Matthew Stafford after Myles Garrett trade

Sean McVay's long-term future in the NFL is one of the league's worst-kept secrets.

Anything could happen, but it seems pretty apparent that the genius Los Angeles Rams head coach will likely not spend the next few decades roaming an NFL sideline. If anything, the 40-year-old who brought two NFC championships and the Super Bowl 56 title to Los Angeles will probably retire alongside his hand-picked veteran MVP quarterback, Matthew Stafford.

After the Rams' monster, absolute blockbuster trade for Myles Garrett on Monday, I think that reality is clearer than ever.

Whenever the 38-year-old Stafford retires, so will McVay. It might even happen after the 2026 NFL season if the Rams' big bet on Garrett pays off and they win Super Bowl 61. Full stop.

HOLLYWOOD GARRETT: Who won this Rams-Browns trade?

Why do I say all of this? For one, I've never gotten the impression that someone like McVay was interested in rebuilding. He is a brilliant win-now kind of coach who clearly doesn't want to waste his time on bad-to-mediocre teams. There's a good reason he didn't seem all that excited about the Rams' draft selection of Ty Simpson this past spring. In the paraphrased words of Magic Johnson, McVay's not gonna be there.

For the other, McVay has long seemed like a natural television analyst, be it in the studio or as a color commentator. His famous, meme-like photographic memory and general charm make it seem like a giant television contract is just waiting for him whenever he finally puts away his headset. To put it lightly, working in NFL television is much less taxing and probably much more lucrative than working as an NFL coach. Taking a lot of money to talk about football rather than coach it almost year-round is a no-brainer for most people. Plus, McVay's decision to jump to the medium screen would be all the easier, given that he will have accomplished what he wanted to while he was still coaching.

I won't pretend to know precisely what a unique personality like McVay is thinking. I'm just reading the tea leaves here. And they say that this all-time coach walks off into the sunset whenever his all-time quarterback is ready to. It's the most logical conclusion. The trade for a generational defender like Garrett confirms as much.
