Defense was the main concern of the Dallas Cowboys during the 2025 season. Matt Eberflus got fired for it and Jerry Jones has committed to spend more in NFL free agency in order to get closer to the Super Bowl. They may not have gotten Maxx Crosby but Christian Parker will be having Rashan Gary and a new pass-defender — former Arizona Cardinals safety Jalen Thompson.

Dallas get a new safety

The Cowboys are signing Thompson in NFL free agency. His contract will last for three years and will be valued at $33 million throughout that  span of time, per The Dallas Morning News.

Notably, there is some familiarity involved in this move. Parker got Ryan Smith to be the Cowboys' cornerback coach and he previously worked for the Cardinals. This means that Thompson will be working closely with someone he learned to thrive with in the past. The move also signals that the Jones' Cowboys could be priming Thompson to become a star safety so that they are able to win games. He could very well be ready to step into that role.

Throughout his seven-year tenure with the Cardinals, Thompson has grown a lot. He played 99 games while defending 37 passes and causing nine interceptions. More than that, he is also very capable of taking down tight ends and receivers. The new Cowboys safety notched 578 combined tackles with 397 of them being solo takedowns. Not to mention, he has also recorded two sacks, two forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, and his longest interception return clocked in at 35 yards.

Jones, Parker, and the Cowboys are slowly delivering for their fans. Will they be able to sign more players to bolster their defense aside from Gary from the Packers and Thompson from the Cardinals?
