The Boston Red Sox are taking a smart approach with several pitchers as the season approaches, especially those returning from injuries or heavy workloads. While that idea is to protect players over the long term, it doesn’t always make the players themselves happy.
That looks to be the case for Patrick Sandoval, who recently admitted he isn’t too happy about the team limiting his workload during camp.
Sandoval has been building up his arm throughout the offseason and is expected to ramp things up as spring progresses. However, the Red Sox want him to slow it down.
The left-hander said that he understands the reasoning, even if it isn’t his idea.
“I’ve been going pretty hard out here since the beginning of January,” Sandoval said, per Tim Healey. “I’m not the biggest fan of this deload, but it’s what they prescribe and what they think will be good for me in the long run. I’ve trusted them so far, so I’m going to keep trusting them.”
Players want to stay on the mound and do what’s needed for themselves and the team, while organizations tend to worry more about health over a 162-game season.
For Boston, keeping Sandoval healthy will be key. The Red Sox are counting on the left-hander to give them innings, even if it’s to help them save others from throwing too much.
