Washington Commanders GM Adam Peters said they need to get younger and faster.

Translation: The team looked old and slow, involved in mismatches, and much change is needed. At last week's 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, Peters spoke regarding getting younger and faster. "That's still going to be a goal," Peters said, "but there is a lot of value in having a good mix of youth and experience -- that's not lost on us. If there's a tiebreaker, you want to try to get younger and faster."

The new league year officially begins on March 11, and this free agent class has the interest of Dan Quinn. "There's going to be difference-makers that will be part of this class," Quinn said last week. ESPN's John Keim wrote Thursday that the Commanders are "expected to be aggressive, pursuing players at edge rusher, receiver and corner in particular."

Peters last week spoke positively, "This draft and free agency kind of line up with what we're looking for. We'll have a chance to really get a lot better." Keim reminded Commanders fans that Peters said this "won't be a return to the early years of former owner Dan Snyder's stewardship, when they'd pursue big names regardless of fit."

Those of us old enough can't forget the Snyder spending spree in 2000 for players beyond their prime, leaving the Redskins with older, declining players and large dead cap hits! It didn't matter if the players were a fit or not. After all, how would Snyder have known such? But Keim added that Peters and Quinn are both saying that if a player is considered a good fit, they will spend to try to get that player to sign with Washington.

They are coming off of a hugely disappointing, quite frustrating 5-12 season which included six losses by double digits with five losses being by 20 or more points. This is not year one, starting from the beginning. This is now year three. Owner Josh Harris needs to see some results that pay off this season into winning more games. Peters and Quinn no doubt feel some pressure to produce, to avoid the proverbial 'hot seat' this season.

"Knowing that there's some that we can go after, that's a big deal," Quinn said, "and knowing that there's difference makers that [have publicly stated they] want to be here, that's a big deal."
