The Buccaneers secured the championship after a commanding 87-57 victory over Gadsden State on Monday, March 2, in Tuscaloosa, giving the Bucs (23-6, 10-3 ACCC) the top spot in the regular-season standings.
"This team worked hard all year, " coach John Eatmon said in a university release. "This program hasn't made the tournament the last three years and now we've won the regular-season championship."
Shelton State set the tone early, opening the game with a 9-2 run and maintaining control throughout. Thirteen different players scored, with sophomores DJ Hamlett, Shah Hall, and Marchello Perkins all in double figures.
Hamlett contributed 12 points and four rebounds; Hall added 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocks; and Perkins recorded 10 points and five rebounds.
Freshman Rodwick Jackson came off the bench to add 12 points, six rebounds and four assists, part of 38 bench points for Shelton State.
"Our first goal was to win the regular season championship. Now, it's on to the tournament to win two games to go to the national tournament," said Eatmon.
The Bucs also finished with a 14-0 home record, marking the fourth unbeaten home campaign under Eatmon.
"I told our team that championship teams don't lose at home and don't get swept," said Eatmon.
The Bucs will close out the regular season on Thursday, March 5, with a road game against Coastal Alabama South.
The team now turns its focus to the ACCC tournament, where just two more wins would secure a spot in the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas.
