Rio Ferdinand has drawn an interesting parallel between the squads under Ruben Amorim and those who played for Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
Amorim became the sixth permanent manager to take charge of the Red Devils since Ferguson stepped away from football management.

The Portuguese coach’s tenure at Old Trafford lasted just 14 months, having taken over from Erik ten Hag in 2024.
Amorim was dismissed in January, with Michael Carrick returning to fill the interim role until the end of the 2025-26 season.
The former Sporting CP manager left with Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League table, having struggled to find consistent form during his time at the club.

Reflecting on his conversation with Dalot, Ferdinand pointed out the differences between Ferguson’s long-term influence and the instability that surrounded Amorim’s tenure.
“Yeah, I mean, listen, the interview will go into that,” he said on Rio Ferdinand Presents.
“But listen, sometimes you are… I’ve been in situations where a manager comes in and you go, ‘He’s got the reins, just take us because that’s all we knew.’
“We knew that from Sir Alex Ferguson. There were situations that we would help and sort out.
“But when it’s a new manager, you’re waiting for him to set the parameters, to set the reboot of the club. And you’re looking to just follow that lead.”

Ferdinand was asked about how Roy Keane and Ryan Giggs would have managed the squad changes during his playing days. He believes the former United leaders would have been able to deal with it, but said the current dressing room is different.
“Yeah, definitely,” Ferdinand added.
“I think that’s something that we would have. But I think that, listen, we were a seasoned kind of… the operation was running on autopilot.
“There [were] guys in there that knew how to run a dressing room, knew how to run a dressing room that was successful.“These guys are looking to be led to that, and that’s where the difference, I think, comes in.”
Carrick has made a strong start since taking over from Amorim. He has now won four of his first five Premier League matches as interim manager of Manchester United.
