The weather outlook, issued on Friday, shows a sharp contrast between the hot western parts of the country and cooler, wetter conditions in the east.

While parts of the Northern Cape and Western Cape can expect hot to very hot weather, thunderstorms could affect several eastern and north-eastern areas.

The forecast also highlights the possibility of widespread thunderstorms in some parts of the eastern interior.

Hot conditions could affect Diwali celebrations in the west

The Northern Cape will experience some of the hottest conditions, with very hot weather forecast around Upington and parts of the province.

The western interior will also remain hot, while parts of the Western Cape can expect warm conditions.

Thunderstorms could affect the east

The eastern parts of the country face a greater risk of thunderstorms.

SAWS forecasts scattered thunderstorms over parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, with isolated to widespread activity indicated across other parts of the north-eastern interior.

KwaZulu-Natal stands out on the outlook, with widespread thunderstorm activity indicated over much of the province.

What Diwali revellers should know

SAWS has urged people planning Diwali celebrations to monitor the weather throughout the day.

If thunderstorms develop, move indoors and avoid open spaces during lightning activity.

Those celebrating outdoors in hot areas should stay hydrated, seek shade and limit prolonged exposure to the heat.

Weather conditions can change, so people should keep checking the latest SAWS forecasts and warnings before heading out.
