Tensions are rising in Napoli circles after the 4-1 defeat against Porto on Wednesday night, which has left the team on just three points from four matches in Europe and at risk of not even qualifying for the knock-out play-off round.

Massimiliano Allegri has now lost half of his competitive matches in charge of Napoli (seven out of 14) and is also in an underwhelming eighth place in Serie A as things stand, already 14 points off the league leaders after 10 matches.

To make matters worse, the players appear to be divided as well, with Lorenzo Lucca and Kevin De Bruyne clashing on the pitch during the Porto defeat, Matteo Politano accusing his non-Italian teammates of not taking enough responsibility, and newspapers claiming that there are too many ‘cliques’ within the Napoli dressing room.

And, as if things couldn’t get much worse, Napoli’s next game comes at home against Serie A leaders Lazio, who have not yet tasted defeat in the league. Gennaro Gattuso’s side have won all five of their away games in the league so far this season and have scored nine goals across their last two away matches, against Juventus and Sassuolo.

According to reports from La Repubblica (via TMW), Napoli owner De Laurentiis has personally intervened and called for an emergency training camp for his players in order to prepare as best as possible for the upcoming test against Lazio.

According to Thursday’s update, the players will report to their hotel on Friday and will remain together until the clash against Lazio at 11.30 GMT on Sunday. Napoli are at home on Sunday and it is not usual for the squad to spend two nights together, away from their families, leading into a regular home league fixture.

The Lazio game will be Napoli’s last before the November international break: They will return with a visit from Torino at 19.45 GMT on November 21.
